12、racialseparationlawsinAmericamadetraveldifficultforher.Duringthistime,anewnightclubopenedintheareaofNewYorkcalledGreenwichVillage.Itwasthefirstclubthathadbothblackandwhiteperformers.Anditwelcomedbothblackandwhitepeopletoheartheperformers.ThenightclubwascalledCafeSociety.ItwasherethatBillyHolidayfirs
13、tsangasongcalledStrangeFruit.Aschoolteachernamed1.ewisAllanhadwrittenitforher.ThesongwasaboutinjusticeandoppressionofblackpeopleinthesouthernpartoftheUnitedStates.Ittoldabouthowmobsofwhitemenhadkilledblackmenbyhangingthemfromtrees.Manypeopleobjectedtothesong.Itwasunlikeanyotherpopularsong.Butitwasah

15、emonthsinprison.Whenshewasreleased,NewYorkCityofficialsrefusedtogiveheradocumentthatpermittedhertoworkinanyplacethatservedalcoholicdrinks.ThismeantHolidaynolongercouldsinginnightclubsandjazzclubs.Shecouldsingonlyintheatersandconcerthalls.Tendaysafterherreleasefromjail,sheperformedatNewYorksfamousCar
