5、ehadamentalproblem.ButyoungTomEdisoncouldlearn.Helearnedfrombooksandheexperimented.Attheageoften,hebuilthisownchemicallaboratory.Heexperimentedwithchemicalsandelectricity.Hebuiltatelegraphmachineandquicklylearnedtosendandreceivetelegraphmessages.Atthetime,sendingelectricsignalsoverwireswasthefastest
6、methodofsendinginformationlongdistances.Attheageofsixteen,hewenttoworkasatelegraphoperator.Helaterworkedinmanydifferentplaces.Hecontinuedtoexperimentwithelectricity.Whenhewastwenty-one,hesenttheUnitedStatesgovernmentthedocumentsneededtorequestthelegalprotectionforhisfirstinvention.Thegovernmentgaveh
7、imhisfirstpatentonanelectricdevicehecalledanElectrographicVoteRecorder.Itusedelectricitytocountvotesinanelection.VOICEONE:Inthesummermonthsofeighteensixty-nine,theWesternUnionTelegraphCompanyaskedThomasEdisontoimproveadevicethatwasusedtosendfinancialinformation.Itwascalledastockprinter.MisterEdisonv
8、eryquicklymadegreatimprovementsinthedevice.Thecompanypaidhimfortythousanddollarsforhiseffort.Thatwasalotofmoneyforthetime.ThislargeamountofmoneypermittedMisterEdisontostarthisowncompany.Heannouncedthatthecompanywouldimproveexistingtelegraphdevicesandworkonnewinventions.MisterEdisontoldfriendsthathis
