3、enthenamesbroad-leavedandconiferous,thoughperhapsthemostsatisfactory,arenotatallexact,fortheconiferginkgohasbroadleavesandbearsnocones.Amongthewoodsmen,thewoodsofbroad-leavedtreesareknownashardwoods,thoughpoplarisassoftaspine,andtheconiferouswoodsareknownassoftwoods,notwithstandingthefactthatyewrank

4、shighinhardnessevenwhencomparedwithhardwoods.Bothinthenumberofdifferentkindsoftreesorspeciesandstillmoreintheimportanceoftheirproducttheconifersandbroad-leavedtreesfarexcelthepalmsandtheirrelatives.Inthemanneroftheirgrowth,boththeconifersandbroad-leavedtreesbehavealike,addingeachyearanewlayerofwood,
