12、ingothermembersoftheirfamilyorgroup.VOICEONE:Innineteenseventy,theNationalGeographicSocietywantedtopublishastoryaboutFosseyandherresearch.ItsentaphotographernamedBobCampbelltoKarisoketotakepictures.HetookapictureofanadultmalegorillanamedPeanutstouchingFosseyshand.Thisbecamethefirstfriendlygorilla-to

13、-humanactioneverrecorded.ThepictureappearedonthefrontcoverofNationalGeographicmagazine.IthelpedtomakeFosseyandherworkfamous.TheAmericanresearcherwasabletositamongthegorillasandplaywiththemandtheiryoung.Shemadenotesofeverythingshesaw.Shetookacount,orcensus,ofthegorillapopulation.Shenotedwhattheanimal

16、heads,handsandfeetoftheanimals.AmongthegorillaskilledwasonecalledDigit.FosseyhadobservedDigitformanyyearsandtreatedhimalmostlikeafriend.Hisremainswereplacedwiththoseofotherdeadgorillasinaspecialburialareanearhercamp.VOICEONE:AfterDigitwaskilled,Fosseyestablishedaprogramtoincreaseinternationalsupportforeffortstoprotectmountaingorillas.ItwascalledtheDigitFund.Fosseyalsobegananactivecampaigntostopthe
