1、SatelliteDatatoMethaneAction:vronmpnUNEP,sMethaneAlertandResponseSystemThroughtheMethaneAlertandResponseSystem(MARS),UNEP,sInternationalMethaneEmissionsObservatory(IMEO)hasfacilitatedconcretemethaneactioninArgentina.MARSisthefirstglobalsatellitedetectionandnotificationsystemprovidingactionabledataon
2、majormethaneemissionsaroundtheworld.InMarch2023,UNEPsIMEOprovidedaMARSnotificationtothegovernmentofArgentinaonseveralmajormethaneemissionseventsdetectedfromoilandgasfacilitiesinthecountry.Thenotificationprovideddetailedinformationonthelocation,magnitude,potentialsources,andoperatorsofeachemissionsev
3、ent.Basedonsatelliteestimates,oneleakwasemittingroughly5.8metrictonsofmethaneperhour.Everyhour,thattranslatestothesameclimateimpactthat100passengervehicleshaveinafullyear.MARSexiststoidentifylargeemissionsliketheseandenabletargetedactiontoresolvethem.UNEPhascontinuedtomonitorthesiteviasatellitesandh
4、asdetectednofurtheremissions.IMEOcontinuestoengagethegovernmentofArgentinaandthecountrysoilandgasindustrytoraiseawarenessofMARS,buildstakeholdercapacityonmethane,andaddressanyfutureemissioneventsastheyaredetected.Asadditionalmethane-detectingsatellitescomeonlineandcountriesandcompaniesexpandtheireng
5、agement,MARSwillbeabletoscaleitsimpactandunlockfurthertransparent,on-the-groundmitigationeffortsthatcanhelpdeliveronthegoalsoftheGlobalMethanePledgeandtheParisAgreement.ThankstoswiftactionfromtheArgentiniangovernmentandrelevantoperators,theleakwasquicklyresolved.FigureIEstimatedIOCationofmethaneemis

7、sourceofemissions.InArgentina,IMEOdetectedseverallargeemissioneventsfromoilandgasfacilitiesusingtheInternationalSpaceStationsEMITsensor.MARSisuniquebecauseIMEOcantaskcertainsatellitestohelpinvestigateemissions.Inthiscase.IMEOrequestedthattheItalianSpaceAgencysPRISMAsatelliteprovideadditionalmonitori
8、ngoftheleak.ALERTNotify and Engage StakeholdersIMEOworkstonotifygovernmentsandcompaniesoflargeemissionseventshappeningacrosstheirjurisdictionsoroperations.Iccontinuesthisengagementasmoreinformationbecomesavailable.InMarch2023,IMEOnotifiedthegovernmentofArgentinaabouttheemissioneventsobservedfromspac
9、e,includingdetailedinformationontheirlocation,size,potentialsources,andoperatorsoftherelevantfacilities.Inthiscase,aheatexchangerhadsufferedrupturedtubes,causingmethanetounknowinglyventintotheatmosphere.RESPONSEStakeholders Take Abatement ActionItisuptonotifiedstakeholderstodeterminehowbesttorespond
10、tothenotifiedemissionsandsharetheiractionswithMARStoshowinitiativeandcommitmenttoenvironmentallyresponsibleoperations.TheArgentiniangovernmentrespondedquickly,sharinginformationwiththerelevantoperatorssotheycouldtakeaction.Afterreceivingthisnotification,theoperatoractedswiftlytoremovedamagedequipmen
11、tfromserviceandconductnecessaryrepairs.Theyfurtherimplementedaleakverificationplantopreventsubsequentemissions.OsystemTrack, Learn, Collaborate, ImproveIMEO continues to monitor notified locations for future emissions as mitigation efforts proceed. Data and analyses are made public 45 to 75 days pos
12、t detection on the MARS data portal.Sincetheinitialnotification,UNEPhasconcinuedtomonitortheArgentiniansiteanddetectednofurtheremissionsfromthesource.IMEOiscontinuingitsengagementwiththegovernmentofArgentinaandindustryactorstoraiseawarenessofMARS,buildcapacityformethaneaction,andtoaddressnewemission
