2、onalSpeleologicalSociety.ThisdocumentillustratesthebasicmanuscriptformrequiredforconsiderationforpublicationintheJournalofCaveandKarstStudies.JournaltextistypesetusingRomantypeinIheJournalofCaveandKarstStudieswhichrequiresthatjournalnames,suchastheJournalofCaveandKarstStudiesorabiologicalspeciesname
3、,beinitalictype.Forexample,thebiologicalspeciesnamefortheblindcavefish,Amblyopsisrosae,mustappearinitalicformwhentextappearsinRomanformsoastosetoffthescientificnamefromtherestofthetext.INTRODUCTIONTheNationalSpeleologicalSocietyservesthekarstcommunityandsocietyatlargeinseveralways,amongthembypublish
4、ingtheJournalofCaveandKarstStudieswhichpresentstheresultsofinvestigations.TheJournalofCaveandKarstStudiesisamultidisciplinaryjournaldevotedtocaveandkarstresearchthatseeksoriginal,unpublishedmanuscriptsconcerningthescientificstudyofcavesand/orkarstfeatures.AuthorsdonotneedtobemembersoftheNationalSpel
5、eologicalSociety(NSS),butpreferenceisgenerallygiventomanuscriptsofimportancetoNorthAmericanspeleology.TheEditoroftheJournalofCaveandKarstStudieshastheresponsibilityformaintainingtheJournalqualityandforreviewingandacceptingpaperssubmittedforpublication.TheseguidelinesderivefromtheJournalEditor,s,Asso
6、ciateEditors,andAdvisoryBoard,sdefinitionofthestandardsofqualityforscientificresearchanditspublicationintheJournal,andfromthekarstcommunitysdesireandneedtohaveahigh-qualityjournaldedicatedtokarstscholarship.Theguidelinesthatfollowareintendedtoprovideprospectiveauthorswithclearinstructionsandanexampl
7、efordevelopingmanuscriptssuitableforpublicationintheJournalofCaveandKarstStudies,byensuringpropergrammaticalandaestheticqualityandbyensuringthatthehighestethicalstandardsareadheredtoatalltimes.BASICFORMATOFEVERYPAPEREverypapersubmittedtotheJournalofCaveandKarstStudiesmustfollowthebasicformat.Theacce
8、ptedformatisastandardformusedbyallscientificjournals.Toassistauthorswithmanuscriptpreparation,thisMSWordtemplatemaybeused.Althoughsubheadsarenotshown,itisexpectedthatauthorswillclearlydistinguishfirst-,second-,third-,andfourth-levelheadsintheirmanuscriptORDEROFPARTSTheorderofpartsinapaperistitlepage

10、tionsListAcknowledgmentsReferencesAppendicesFigureCaptionsTablesNotallheadingswillbeusedinanygivenmanuscript.Forexample,manuscriptswithnoequationsorveryfewequationswillnotneedaNotationsList.Otherpapersmayhaveheadingnamesdifferentthanthoselisted.Forexample,aMaterialsandMethodsheadingmaybereplacedbyon
11、eormoreappropriatelynamedheadings.NotethattheinterdisciplinarynatureoftheJournalofCaveandKarstStudieswillnecessarilyrequirethattheEditoracceptpapersthatmayvaryconsiderablyfromtheheadingslistedabove.However,thebasicformmustbeadheredtoatalltimes.Belowisabasicscientificstylethatshouldbelooselyfollowed.

13、bersforcommunicatingwiththeauthor(s).AbstractEverypapermustbeprecededbyanabstractofnotmorethan250words.Abstractsshouldconciselysummarizeresearchmethods,results,andconclusions,butnotincludecitationstoreferences.IntroductionTheintroductionshouldconsistofabriefdiscussionofthenatureoftheproblem,relevant
14、literaturereview,andthepurposeofthepaper.Thelengthandlevelofdetailincludedaresubjecttotheauthorsdiscretion,butwilllikelydependontheextentoftheproblemandtheauthor,ssenseofhowmuchintroductorymaterialisneededtodefinetheproblem.MaterialsandMethodsMaterialsandmethods,asomewhatgenericheading(authorsmaysub
15、stitutemorespecificheadingnamesasdeemedappropriate),shouldprovidesufficientinformationtoallowreplicationofthestudy,sproceduresandresults.ResultsandDiscussionTheresultsanddiscussionsection(s)mayappeartogetherorasseparateheadings.Theresultssectionshouldfocusspecificallyontheoutcomeofthestudy.Datashoul
